Homemade Glazed Donuts

You can make a fluffy, cake glazed donut in the comfort of your home and its not as hard as you might think. There is nothing better than a breakfast pastry that you know isn’t filled with unnatural preservatives and I swear when you share baked goods people can just taste how much love and effort was putting into creating this sweet donut.

If you are a donut lover, you will love making these homemade glazed donuts. Perfectly fried lightly golden, with a cakey center and a think but sweet glazed outer crust to finish. Let’s get into this recipe…

Equipment & Ingredients

To make these homemade glazed donuts you will need these ingredients:

  • Wheat Flour
  • Active Yeast
  • Milk
  • Vegetable Shortening
  • Eggs
  • White Sugar
  • Salt
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract

As for the equipment, the list is much shorter! You will just need:

  • Cooling Rack
  • Parchment Paper
  • 9×11 Baking Sheets
  • Frying Pan
  • Mixing Bowls

Ingredients

  • Doughnut Butter
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed

  • 2 tablespoons instant yeast

  • 2 eggs

  • 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening, melted and cooled

  • 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 3 1/2 cups wheat flour

  • Vegetable Oil, for frying

  • Glaze Ingredients
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  • In a bowl, add the warm milk, yeast and half of the sugar. Mix together and allow the yeast to activate by setting aside for 10 minutes.
  • While that sits, in a large bowl, add the wheat flour, salt and rest of the sugar. Whisk together until combined.
  • Add in the eggs, 2 tablespoons of melted vegetable shortening and the activated yeast mixture. Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to fold these wet ingredients into the dry until combined.
  • Then add in the rest of the melted vegetable oil, mixing again until combined. Then kneading with your hands for a few minutes until the dough is smooth and supple.
  • Place this dough on a slightly floured, clean surface. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to about 1/4 of an inch thick. These will rise during proofing and puff during frying, so don't make the cut out donuts too thick.
  • Then cut out round donuts with a 3 inch cookie cutter and cut out a smaller circle in the middle of the dough with a 1 inch cookie cutter.
  • Place these cut out donuts on square pieces of parchment paper. Allow them to rise for 90 minutes.
  • Start heating the vegetable oil to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Before frying the donuts, whip up the glaze.
  • In a mixing bowl, add the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract all at once. Use a whisk to mix this together and slowly increase whipping speed as the powdered sugar melts into the milk. Be sure to mix out all the clumps.
  • After the donuts have proofed and the frying oil is hot, place each donut into the frying oil, pulling away the parchment paper as the donut releases from it and begins to fry and float in the oil.
  • Fry about 4 donuts at a time. cooking for about 1 and a half minutes on each side or until each side is lightly golden brown.
  • Prepare a plate with paper towel to place the fried donuts on. Also prepare a baking sheet with a cooling rack for after dipping the donuts in the glaze.
  • As soon as the donuts come out of the frying oil allow the excess oil to dry off on the paper towel covered plate, and only wait about a minute before dipping into the glaze.
  • Flip the donut on each side in the glaze and then let the excess frosting fall of the donut before transferring to the prepared cooling rack.
  • Repeat with the rest of the donuts and then let the donuts completely cool until the glaze has created a dried exterior to the cake donut.
  • Serve and enjoy with milk or coffee!
